Edinburgh Local Yarn Stores Guide (Part 3)

The great thing about Edinburgh being such a walkable city? Even if you’re only visiting for a long weekend, you can probably visit more than one yarn shop!

If you’re going to the palace, why not stop by Ginger Twist Studio? If you’re heading to Stockbridge, you might as well go via McAree Brothers. And lastly, if you find yourself at the National Museum of Scotland, you could take a stroll to Be Inspired Fibres.

Be Inspired Fibres

30 Marchmont Rd, Edinburgh EH9 1HZ

A little off the beaten track, Be Inspired Fibres is jam-packed with so much lovely, lovely luxury yarn. There’s twisted hanks hung from pegs, skeins on shelves, in carts, in baskets, in bags, in your…hand…..

My mom was on the hunt for some Jamieson’s Spindrift for a colorwork sweater and owner Mei was super helpful. She pulled out a bunch of options for us to look through and kindly dealt with my mom’s indecisiveness 😅

Find such hand dyed gems like Qing Fibre, Uschitita, and Skein Queen 😍 Okay, I just listed names from my own stash, but it’s true, you can find it all at Be Inspired Fibres!

But it’s not just speckly indie dyed yarn. I always admire the cones of ITO yarn— a Japanese brand specialising in very fine yarn. And there’s the scrumptious woolly wool of Icelandic Lettlopi and Portuguese Rosa Pomar.

Things to do near Be Inspired Fibres

National Museum of Scotland

Forget the British Museum, the Grand Gallery of the National Museum of Scotland is a stunner. Honestly, if you go to the museum for one thing it should be for this view. If you go for two things, make the second Dolly the sheep. And for a lesser known part of the museum, go up to the rooftop terrace for views of the city.

The Meadows

On a warm, sunny day you'll find the Meadows crowded with locals and students from the university enjoying the weather. Otherwise, it's a great green space for a walk, and you can cut through to get back into the city centre.

Summerhall

Summerhall is a fantastic venue in what used to be The University of Edinburgh Veterinary College. Now you can enjoy a drink at the Royal Dick Bar, tour the Pickering's Gin Distillery, view an art exhibit, see a gig, go to a ceilidh, play an escape game, etc.

The Southern Bar
This is one of my favourite pubs in Edinburgh thanks to the wall of craft beer on tap behind the bar. My go to, in case you're wondering, is a Long White Cloud IPA if they have it. It's also a great place for a burger.
