My craft of choice is crochet, and I think it’s time crochet had its moment in the sun (again).

Do you have that friend who asks how your “knitting” is going? Or maybe a knitter has complimented your crochet because they “didn’t know crochet could be so beautiful.” Ouch!

I’ve had those friends, and I’ve gotten those “compliments.”

It’s time to reframe the conversation around crochet! I 👏🏼 Am 👏🏼 Here 👏🏼 For 👏🏼 It 👏🏼

If you’re a crocheter, you just have to know about my latest project, Moorit, a high-end indie craft magazine for crocheters. Are you looking for modern and wearable crochet garments? We got ‘em. You want thick, luxurious matte paper? No problem. A commitment to accessibility and representation? Well, duh.

Do you remember how I said we need to reframe the convo around crochet? Well, consider Moorit one of the ways we do just that.

I got it from my mama.

My mom (aka my crafting idol) taught me to crochet as a kid, but I didn’t pick up a hook again until I was an adult. I found crochet satisfied both the maker and the analyst inside of me. There is fluidity and creativity in a crochet stitch, but there is also math and logic in a pattern. *swoon*

It wasn’t long before my mom and I started Keep Calm and Carry Yarn, a knitting and crochet podcast, as a way to keep in touch when I moved from the US to Scotland. Cue my deep dive into the wonderful crochet community. I met fellow podcasters, attended my first yarn show, and developed an appreciation for variegated yarns.

You might recognise me from one of my other projects…

I have my fingers in a lot of pies these days, so you might have stumbled across my work in one way or the other!

If stylish and modern crochet is your jam, maybe you’ve seen some of my crochet patterns. My Tweel Cowl was shortlisted for the unravel... a festival of yarn design competition, and the George Street Jumper was on the cover of Crochet Now magazine.

I’m also the Web Development Director for BIPOC in Fiber, a website and resource portal designed to amplify and celebrate the work of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour working in the fibre industry.

Me in a nutshell?

I’m third generation Chinese-American, and I grew up mostly in upstate New York (although I’ve lived in eight different states). For now I call Edinburgh home where I work part time in the creative industry, promoting the arts in Scotland.

If I’m not crocheting, you might find me exploring Scotland’s natural and historical places, having a pint at my local quiz night, or reading the latest feminist book club pick.
